Another year passes, and another What The Fur does as well.

This year saw the introduction of a new hotel, new games, new panels and new friends. Every year I am amazed at the people, the smiles, and the great things that happen here in Montreal. I couldn’t ask for better.

You, the 297 of you who came to participate, raised $2185.75 for our charity, the EcoMuseum. That is an astounding amount! You gave Montreal a show outside during the Fursuit Parade. You scored during the first ever Fursuit Hockey Games, and you entertained during the Fursuit games and the Masquerade. We provided the place, but you provided the convention.

We are already making plans for next year’s event, working hard to make some changes and to improve on things to make it even better. I hope that you all understand that though we – the staff and volunteers that help make What The Fur what it is – need a little bit of a break. But there have already been ideas floating around, and 2014 looks to be just as amazing.

On behalf of What The Fur, our staff, volunteers and attendees, I would like to extend a special thanks to HollyAnn for being our Guest of Honour this year. I would also like to thank all of the staff and volunteers for their hard work and dedication, and lastly, I would like to thank all of you for coming and making What The Fur what it is: the best convention.

And with the convention over, the ball closed down and the clock striking midnight, What The Fur lived on, happily ever after…

…definitely not the end.

What The Fur? Fairy Tales
May 17-19 2013
Montreal, Quebec, Canada

How can we let a good thing end so soon?
The answer: We can't. The masses have spoken, and so the decision has been made to keep pre-registration open for another 2 weeks! Well, nearly. We will be keeping pre-registration going until Friday, May 3rd at Midnight. But this will be your final chance to pre-register.
This also means the last few tables in the Dealers Den are up for grabs too!
http://register.whatthefur.ca

And the good news keeps on coming!
The Hotel has informed us that it will continue to accept room reservations at our convention rate so long as they have the rooms available in the hotel! So if you're still doing the math, or just about missed the deadline, don't worry! There's still room! But the offer is subject to change without notice, so don't delay too long!
http://hotel.whatthefur.ca

Looking for something to do?
Do you want to be on programming at What The Fur? It's not too late to suggest a panel or workshop.
Or you can look at our current panel listings - what we already have planned - and sign up for a panel or two.

Registration and Hotel Reservations
There are now only two weeks left to pre-register for the convention! As of Midnight on April 16th registration will close until the beginning of the convention. This also means that as of midnight on the 16th we will no longer be offering the Patron level of membership. At the door, the prices for our Regular and Sponsor levels of membership will be going up by $5, so register as soon as you can! Just go to http://register.whatthefur.ca.
Also, the hotel will no longer accept reservations under the What The Fur room rates as of Midnight on the 16th, so if you haven’t already reserved your room at the Delta, now would be the time! There are still rooms left to be had, and everyone knows that staying in the hotel makes for an easier visit. Go to http://hotel.whatthefur.ca for details, and for the link to reserve online.

Dealers
As above, Dealers registration will also close on the 16th. With the added space in our new Dealers Den there are still tables available, but they’re going fast. Make sure you have your spot by registering now! Also, we have added an option to purchase extra table space! Due to demand, you can now add 3-foot or 6-foot table spaces to your spot. If you have already registered your place, but want to add more room, just visit the EventFox registration site and add them to your registration. It’s that simple!

Art Show and the Charity Auction
If you have something you want to have on display, whether just for viewing or to have people bid on, our Art Show still has room left. There is information on the Art Show page of the website, and the panels are only $25 each until the 14th.
And if you have something you’d like to enter into the Charity auction, or something you’d like to provide to help us raise funds for our charity, please let us know! This year we will be adding a raffle area, so that you can buy tickets to bid on specific items without them being in the auction! But we’d like to have things donated to the cause! Just send us an email to auction@whatthefur.ca if you have any questions on what might be accepted.

Hockey!
The International Fursuit Hockey League is shaping up nicely! The referees are busy putting the details on the rules, but already we have teams chomping at the bit to face off against eachother! Right now we have teams of fursuiters from Montreal, from Boston, and from Toronto, with a possible fourth and fifth coming in soon!
Do you want to play? Sign up now by sending an email to ifhl@whatthefur.ca. Sign up will also be available at the Registration desk at the convention.

Panelists and Presenters
We’re still open for ideas and for people who would like to help on the programming side of the convention.
If you have an idea for a panel, a workshop or a presentation, let us know! Remember that you don’t have to be on the panel to submit an idea, we just want to know what it is you’d like to see! But if you have the itch to help out by being on a panel, or you want to run a workshop, we’re very much open to that as well!

The Dance
On Saturday evening, we will be starting our usual dance with a little bit of flair! In honour of our theme, we will be hosting a Masquerade Ball! So break out your bowties, your suits and dresses, and shine your shoes up! For the first portion of the dance, of course, masks are requested, whether you use just one, or put another over your fursuit.
Also, we’re still on the hunt for DJs for the dance! If you’re interested, send an email to av@whatthefur.ca.

Hello everyone,
First, a note: Over the last week and a half (Since November 11th), we had an issue that was only just identified and fixed with our registration system. If you tried to register for What The Fur between the 11th and the 20th of November, we need you to re-register for the convention. Deepest apologies.
Second: A reminder. What The Fur's Early-Bird Pre-registration ends at midnight on the 30th. So if you're looking at saving a little, register by then! On the 1st of December, most of our prices will be going up a little bit.
So don't delay! http://register.whatthefur.ca to make sure you're in under the deadline!

We're going out of our way to try and make 2013 the best possible convention you could attend. To that end, we've secured a deal!

Why take the train? Well, it's more comfortable than the bus, and the main Montreal train station is just three blocks from the hotel! No complicated in-city travel planning is needed!

…there was a mountain. But this wasn’t just any mountain. This mountain was royal. It’s wooded slopes were the home to all manner of creatures. After many years, the trees gave way to the expansion of a kingdom. Giant buildings made of shining glass were erected, roads and causeways were created to aid in the delivering of goods and services. But the animals still remained, and thrived. Annually, folk from other kingdoms come to visit the Royal Mountain. They come from lands near and far for one purpose: To celebrate.
The pumpkin carriages are parked, the orchestra has struck the first note, and the banquet is awaiting. What The Fur 2013 is ready to receive you to our Fairy Tale kingdom! We’re pleased to announce that our fourth convention is building up nicely, with the staff rallying their elves and fairy godmothers to help.

What The Fur has come and gone, and without any reservations I can say that this was the best convention I have ever attended and the absolute best that I have ever helped build. But the thanks don’t only lie with the great team of people that helped make it what it is, but also with all of you: the people who came. The people who had fun, who ran panels and who sold artwork of all kinds in the Dealers Den, the volunteers that arrived and said “How can I help?”. Thank you for making this convention what it is: Unique.
In the years I have been helping to run events, none has brought a smile to my face like What The Fur has. After this weekend I got home, collapsed, and smiled. I was exhausted, my feet hurt, but I was so happy that I saw so many smiles over the weekend. I’m still riding that rush. Others come to WTF and say that this is the best convention they attend. Now, after our third and best year, I see what they see. So thank you so very much.
As I said at the closing ceremonies, What The Fur has grown. We had an amazing 282 people come to Montreal for the weekend, and from everything I saw, heard, and felt, I think everyone had a good time. 282 people is amazing, and it gives me reason to push forward and work hard to ensure 2013 holds an even better con for people.
I want to once again apologise for the lack of a parade. For those who aren’t aware, or did not know the reasons for the cancellation, we got hit in two ways. Though we love the Hotel Espresso, it is a little too small for an indoor parade of Fursuiters so we hold our parade outside on the streets of Montreal. The first downfall was the weather. Rain plus fursuits equals no fun. The second reason was the protests happening in downtown Montreal. We just couldn’t take the chance of something going wrong. To my knowledge, the protests actually took place just a few blocks from the hotel on Saturday night. So I want to thank all of our guests again for their understanding, and I promise that in 2013 we will definitely find a way to make the parade happen.
More than that, and one that does bring a tear (well, more than one) to my eye, is what we did for our charity, the Ecomuseum (www.ecomuseum.ca ). All of you gave so generously. So much so that although we did not reach the original goal of $5000, we more than surpassed what we raised last year. Today Myself, Firebreath and Manny visited the Ecomuseum and presented them with the $4150.93 that was raised! The staff at the Ecomuseum were blown away, and wanted to pass on their thanks and gratitude to you all. I myself was blown away. And again, though we didn’t raise the original amount, more than $4000 was enough to tip the scales and make this chairbunny bald. I know there were many of you out there filming as I was cuffed to the chair and as my hair was removed fully. I stand by this even if it does seem to make me cooler (temperature-wise, not status-wise).
As a double hit, the hair that had been growing for 14 years will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society to be used to produce wigs for those who have lost hair due to cancer treatments.

In closing, again I want to thank all of you. For making the convention the best time that could be had, and for giving so much. You are what makes it all worth the effort. I hope to see you all next year!

As the convention creeps closer, some of us think of some important things. Things such as “Do I need to pack that sketchbook?”, “Did I set the alarm before laying down?” or “Do I need that extra pair of underwear?” But the sad reality is, most of us forget that sketchbook (and yes, even the underwear) now and then. One thing that also gets forgotten is making sure you have a place to stay for your visit.

For those of you coming in from out of town, the Hotel Espresso is still offering us a room rate of $110 CDN per night, but the deal isn’t without its end date. The deal ends on May 6th! So if you haven’t made your arrangements with the hotel for a room yet, get on it! The room rate is available for anyone staying at the hotel from May 31st to June 4th, so you can even spend an extra day checking out the sights! Just be sure to mention you’re going to What The Fur when you call the hotel to reserve your room (that would be -514-938-4611 or 1-877-468-3550). Sadly, getting the good rate on the rooms isn’t available online, but if you call, the people working at the main desk of the hotel know us and love us.
If you’re looking for someone to share a room with, we have our forums available on the website, and there is also our Livejournal or Dreamwidth groups for sending requests.

Just 8 more weeks until the creatures of the night come out of hiding!

Oh, and don’t forget the underwear.

What The Fur
June 2012, Montreal, Quebec
www.whatthefur.ca

I want to thank all of you who came to Montreal and participated in What The Fur this year. Without all of you, nothing would be possible. Also without all of you, it would be about a dozen people sitting in a bunch of empty hotel rooms for a weekend. So thank you! The zombies seem to be dissapearing slowly, unfortunately taking all of your smiling faces with them. But have no fear, we're already working on 2012!

For a little bit of information, here’s what happened in June 2011:

  • 221 people came to Montreal and had an amazing weekend!
  • 32 people got a chance to walk around the Hotel Espresso, and even through the heart of downtown Montreal in their fursuits, much to the surprise and happy confusion of many passers by.
  • A taste bud explosion was said to have re-occurred at the opening ceremonies, reportedly caused by the consumption of mass amounts of some of the best chocolates out there! (We sincerely apologise to those who lost sleep due to the ingestion of too much chocolate). The Tastiest Opening Ceremonies; returning to you next year.
  • People bought art, learned about the fandom, learned a few new skills, and made a lot of new friends.

And not the least, which brought both a tear to my eye and smiles from many, the attendees of What The Fur gave generously to our charity. Through donations and through the Charity Auction we raised an astounding $2223 for the Ecomuseum.
Our website will soon be updated with information about exactly where this money will be used. The Ecomuseum and What The Fur want to thank everyone who gave of their time, and of their money to help. To all of the artists who submitted pieces to the auction, and to everyone who visited the Ecomuseum, thank you.

As announced at the closing ceremonies this year, What The Fur will indeed rise from under the fallen masses of zombies to return next year! Our Guest of Honour will be none other than the amazing Karine “Kanthara” Charlebois, and we will be host to all kinds of denizens of the dark with our theme for 2012: Creatures of the Night.

At the time of writing this, we are planning to hold the event from the 1st through 3rd of June 2012. We can also confirm we will be returning to the Hotel Espresso. Registration for the convention will open up soon, so keep your eyes out.

To close off this year, I would like to thank each and every person that attended the event. You are all what made it worthwhile. From those that lent their time in giving a panel or workshop, those that volunteered their time to make sure that everything ran smoothly, to the tireless staff who gave up so much to make sure everyone enjoyed themselves, and to you, the attendees, without whom this wouldn’t have been possible. I would also like to thank our gracious guests, Kalika and Demicoeur for all of the time they spent preparing, and for all the beautiful artworks.

I would also like to send out a special thanks to the staffs of several other conventions, without their help, we couldn’t have done what we did. So, in no particular order: Furnal Equinox, FurFright, Feral! and Con*Cept.  Also, to the members of MonFur for their support and help before and during the convention.

Thank you for 2011, and see you next year!

Are you excited yet? Anxious? Nervous? No? You should be.

With merely 9 days before the start of the Zombie Apocalypse, here's a few bits of last-minute news and reminders for you all.

First: Register now! Remember that if you haven't already, go on over to http://register.whatthefur.ca and register now! You still have until midnight on the 29th (eastern time) to pre-register. As of the 30th, the only way to register for the convention will be at door.
As a reminder, What The Fur will only accept cash at the door. There are banks nearby if you are in need.

Second: There's still room at the inn! We've just confirmed that there are still rooms left at the Hotel Espresso, and that they will continue to take reservations as long as there's room.
In the event you don't get a room in the hotel, we do have an alternate hotel available, so if you miss out on a room, let us know and we'll point you where we can.

Third: Registration reminders
  • Whether you are pre-registered or not, we require to see valid government photo ID when you come to the registration table
    • This can be a drivers liscense, passport or health card, so long as it is government issued and has your photo on it.
  • Lost badges: If you lose your badge during the convention, WTFur will replace it for you for a fee of $20. If you then find your badge, return to the registration desk with both badges and we will refund the replacement fee.
  • Pocket programs and restaurant guides will be available at registration
  • If you have a replica weapon as part of your outfit, costume or fursuit for the convention, please take a moment to read this message from Operations.
Fourth: Listen to us go! If you're headed to a nearby restaurant, going for a walk, or just hanging out in your room, tune your radios into 104.5 FM. CWTF will be broadcasting for the duration of the convention! Updates, news and more!

Lastly: Get here safe everyone, and we'll see you in 9 days!

2- Even we don't know what he is...
Bradley

What The Fur's mascot, Bradley, is a mishmash of several different species. When he was created, even we didn't know exactly what he is.

He's named after a font type.

Bradley has undergone some changes this year, with some new looks and some new antics, and should be more active around the convention.
