Hello everyone.

Some people seem to be questioning What The Fur, and where the fees we collect from registrations go. There also seems to be several misconceptions about how a convention is run. I am going to clear a few things up, and let people see exactly what goes into the convention, and why the amounts quoted and the claims made on several posts are invalid and incorrect.

First, let me point out that not every cost is going to be listed. We’re still tallying the receipts from this year’s event. Even buying Duct Tape gets accounted for. But these are general numbers that I currently have access to:

Hotel costs: $17815.84
(This is by far the largest category of expense. And every year it gets more expensive.)

Audio-visual rentals: $1609.65
Food (Chocolate Social): $475.00
(there are some pennies involved, but that’s not important)

Camera and photography: $244.89
Guest of Honour (hotel room): $614.08
Advertising: ~$2000.00
(Web, banner, business cards, flyers, posters, dealer tables at other conventions)

T-shirts: $1295.65
Conbooks: $912.21
Registration (Badges, computers, paper, ink): $1659.78
Other equipment purchases: $103.00

Total expenses: $26730.10
(Still getting the accurate total, but just what I wrote up above)

Now, total income from registrations: $21589.18

For a total loss of: $5140.92

Why so little from registrations? Keep in mind that I am giving approximate values, as Paypal and Credit Card transactions have fees we have to pay on each one. Also, we have 4 different registration periods, with discounts of up to $15 depending on when someone registers.
-Dealer helpers do not pay for their entry (that’s 18 people)
-Regular @ ~$40 to ~$55: 167
-Sponsor @ ~$70 to ~$85: 51
-Patron @ ~$140 to ~$150: 16
-Dealers @ ~$70 to ~$120: 40
-Day passes, Dance passes @ ~$12 to ~$32: 61

And this does not include the over $2100 for charity.

So, as opposed to the statement that we’re walking away with tens of thousands of dollars in our pockets, I am personally paying thousands to give you all a good weekend.

I hope this helps explain things.

Good day, Agents.

I am writing you this message in the hopes that I might share my thoughts on the convention that we held from May 20th to 22nd at the Holiday Inn Pointe-Claire. There is some information that I am sure you are waiting to hear, and I know that I am wanting to share with you all.

First and foremost, allow me to share with you our accomplishments. On the topic of attendance, 439 agents descended on Montreal, making this the largest convention of its type to be held on this island ever. Our annual Fursuit Parade culminated in a total of 77 fursuiters. That’s an amazing 17% of the whole convention! For the Ecomuseum, our charity, we raised $2,194.73. And though we didn’t reach our goal for this year, every cent raised means that much more to be put towards the welfare and care of the animals at the Ecomuseum. I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of such an amazing and giving community. This puts What The Fur’s total donations to the Ecomuseum at over $17,500. That’s astounding!

As many of you have been asking, here are some of the links to all of the photos that we have. We would also like to ask that if any of you have photographs that you would like to share, please let us know!
Moving on to other business, I want to put out a very big and heart-felt thank you to each and every one of you. From the veteran con-goers to the newly arrived first time attendees, you all make What The Fur what it is: home. Seeing all of the smiling faces, the friends hugging and having a good time, the fursuiters and artists, the DJs and the gamers, it reminds me of the reason that we – the staff and volunteers – do this every year. Seeing old friends to making hundreds of new ones is just a part of the convention for us.

And further on that, as Chairperson for What The Fur, I have to say that those that deserve all of the thanks are the ones who put in the hard work to make everything happen and to bring it all together. All of the staff and volunteers. You are beyond compare. There are too many names to name so I will refrain from trying, but suffice it to say that What The Fur isn’t my convention. The convention is theirs. The convention is yours. So I want to thank you. You who are reading this and having those flashbacks to one of the best weekends of the year. You who have been a part of something great. You who made this small little thing a place to call home. Thank you. And to help make things even better, I ask that each and every one of you follow this link to our survey, and let us know exactly what you liked and didn’t, and how we can make things better: http://rga.la/WTF16_Survey

Over the next few weeks, the staff and I will be still working. We will be putting together plan for next year, and as soon as we have things solidified we will announce it and let you know. I would love to make the announcements right here and now but there are just a few more redacted documents that need to be filed away before we’re ready for that. But what I can say, unequivocally, is that yes, we will be looking forward to seeing you all again in 2017.
When we all come home again.

On behalf of the whole team here at What The Fur, I will close by giving you all of our most sincere thanks.

Agent 002 - Chairperson, What The Fur

Attention all secret agents!

Too many gadgets exploding in your face lately? A lack of support on your missions with the latest tools? Need a change of pace from all that action-y, in your face mission stuff?

Then we have the perfect mission for you!

What The Fur is growing, and with it, we need staff. Without staffers who help to run the con, we can't continue to put on such an amazing show. As such if you have the technical chops and energy to step up to the challenge, then we want you!

Currently the AV and IT departments are looking for staff that have experience with a wide variety of equipment. We're not going to bore you with the details, but if you've used a video camera (and no, we're not talking about your cellphone) or know what a network switch is, then drop us a line.

If you have a resume showing us your volunteer or work experience with any of these roles, all the better! If not, don't worry. Just let us know what you've done and with what tools & projects, etc. Training will be included so don't fret if you feel you may not have all the skills necessary.

Being staff can be very rewarding and helps to give us the ability to put on bigger and more technically spectacular events each year. Give us a shout now!

May 20-22 2016

The new year is fast approaching, and that means several deadlines are as well! Your missions depend on action!

First: Early Bird Pre-Registration for What The Fur ends when the new year begins, so in order to save, you should register before the ball drops! And if you have not paid by the midnight deadline, your invoices will be changed to reflect the new rates. Visit our registration page at http://whatthefur.ca/registration/registration16.php for all of the details you need to achieve success in your missions!

Second (Part 1): Special Agents, otherwise known as “Dealers” – your deadlines for payment are approaching as well! We have already fully booked our Dealers Room, and as such have started a waiting list for prospective dealers. Only payment will secure your place in the room. If you have not paid your registration by the changing of the year, you will be rotated onto the end of the waiting list and you might lose your place! Please check your email for directives from our Dealers Director. PLEASE NOTE: If you have registered but have received no mail from the Dealers Director in the last week or two, please email dealers@whatthefur.ca to advise the Director so she can forward you this time-sensitive information!

Second (Part 2): Did you miss out on registering for a dealers table? All hope is not lost! You can always register for the convention, and then get yourself onto the waiting list for a table by visiting http://whatthefur.ca/registration/waitlist16.php. If a space opens up, you will be given an opportunity to get one of the coveted tables. There are presently 14 half-tables (or 7 full tables) that are not confirmed.

Third: On January 2nd, 2016, there is an event taking place in Ottawa. The codename for the event is Pawprints in the Snow (though, as good spies you all know not to leave any prints in the snow). What The Fur has managed to infiltrate this event, and you will have the opportunity to register for WTFur there, in person. Further, we encourage all agents to infiltrate this event. Details are to be found at https://www.facebook.com/events/847269685389330 .

Message urgent à tous les agents!

20-22 mai 2016

The information you're about to hear is top secret.
Unauthorized publication or leaking of this information would be an act of high treason, for which you would tried and convicted by a secret military tribunal and summarily executed.
So no, Ms Poovey, I don't think a selfie would be appropriate.

Fall Intelligence Report
1 - Agent 001 - The Guest of Honour
2 - Mission - Registration
3 - Notice for Special Agents code-named Dealers
4 - Target - Hotel
5 - Survey
6 - Recruiting Volunteer-Level Agents
7 - Contests For the Charity

1 – Intelligence on Agent 001
For those of you that missed receiving some of the previous intelligence reports, We have identified Agent 001 – a.k.a The Guest of Honour. The information has become declassified. Agent 001, is now known to be ShinigamiGirl. 001 originates from Russia, but currently resides in the Canadian city of Montreal. An accomplished artist, she has provided us with a written statement of identity available at http://whatthefur.ca/information/goh.php

2 – Mission – Registration
In order to become a member of the Organization, we are welcoming all prospective agents to register for What The Fur. Currently, the cost of registering starts at $45 CDN, the Sponsoring agents would only need to pay $75, and for those of you looking to support the Organization above and beyond the Regular and Sponsor levels need only provide $160. These rates will be kept only until January 1st, at which point they will go up.
What are the benefits of registering early (aside from the cost, of course)? You get a pre-printed registration package, that will speed up your access to the restricted areas of the convention. You will help us prepare for the event just by letting us know that you’re going!
In regards to registration payments, we would like to point out that if you register now, you do not need to pay immediately. In fact, you can wait right up until the convention itself to pay, however if you pay by the deadlines you will keep the lower rate! When each registration period ends, the price will rise accordingly, but your registration will be guaranteed.

3 – Notice for Special Agents code-named Dealers
As of this week, the room is currently infiltrated nearly to capacity. There are roughly 6 full tables still open, waiting for other agents to take position and sell their merchandise. If you are interested in registering, please do so while the price is at its lowest! Full tables are 110$, and half-tables are 70$. The price will increase on January 1st, 2016.
If you have registered but have not yet paid, please be advised that you are only guaranteed the current invoice price until December 31st. If your invoice is not paid, you will be subject to the price increase as well and will be re-invoiced at the increased price. Payment also guarantees your spot in the room. If we find ourselves at full capacity and start a waiting list, people who have not paid will be given a last opportunity to complete their purchase, or else will be shifted to the end of the waiting list, leaving their spot open to the first people on said waiting list.
If you have any questions, concerns, or other sensitive intel, please report to dealers@whatthefur.ca for debriefing.

4 – Target – Hotel
Once again, the Holiday Inn Pointe-Claire is welcoming us with open arms. The hotel loved us so much in fact, that they’re keeping rates at what they were in 2015. That means rooms are available starting at $129, with no additional cost up to 4 people in the room.
Keep in mind all that the hotel has to offer us: free parking, fridges and microwaves in every room, and walking distance to all sorts of shopping and food.
All the intelligence we’ve gathered is available at http://whatthefur.ca/hotel/hotel.php

5 - Survey
Every year, What The Fur strives to make things better for everyone. We listen to what you have to say, and make changes to make things more fun, more involved, and just better in general.
To that end, we would like to hear from you all. For the last two years What The Fur has held a Fursuit Dance Competition. But some people want to return to having a general Talent Masquerade, which could include things such as dances, skits, musical performances and other things.
So, which would you prefer? Just dancing? Or a combination of dancing, skits and performance? Let us know by going to http://whatthefur.ca/events/eventquestionaire.php

6 - Recruiting Volunteer-Level Agents
What The Fur is looking for any and all agents interested in lending a paw to promote to Volunteer-Level status and clearance level. For this mission, should you accept it, you will be tasked with various jobs and things to do to make sure the organization is running at maximum performance during the event. Rewards and Perks are listed on the website, give them a look. More will be added this year, but we're keeping this classified for now. If you accept this mission, then please fill out the Volunteer form at http://whatthefur.ca/registration/volunteers.php and the agent in charge of volunteers will get back to you shortly. Do note that we need every paw we can get, it is because of YOUR efforts and YOUR continued support that we are able to do what we do.

7 - Contests For the Charity
If you weren’t already aware, 2016 is the year where we want everyone to participate.
The first contest is for all writers and wordsmiths. Although stories will always be accepted in the convention book, these will have the potential to win a prize, while being published in another booklet that will be available only at the convention, and copies sent to winning authors.
The rules
- The limit for the submission is 1500 words, and the theme is the same as the convention’s.
- There will be two ''categories'', based on language; one for French, one for English; the standards are the same for both.
- You can only submit once in each category.
- There will be two winners in each category.
- The contest will end at 25 April 2016. To participate, send your submission to communications@whatthefur.ca
The second contest will be for our charity. In order to help raise money for the Ecomuseum, we would like to engage artists to help us out. Following on our theme, we would like to create a calendar. We are looking for artwork mimicking cinema posters for spy movies, television shows and books.
We have twelve to 18 spots open, and all proceeds from the sales of the calendars will go directly to the funds raised for the Ecomuseum.
The artwork used in the final product will be chosen by our staff, and the artists whose work is selected will receive a small gift and a large thank you from the convention.
Artwork should be 8.5” x 11”, preferably in landscape format, and of high resolution.
Questions and submissions can be sent to information@whatthefur.ca.
The deadline for submissions is February 29th 2016.

Thursday! We reach Thursday and the time is up! Well, not really, but you'll have to wait after that.
On Thursday, May 7th at midnight (actually 11:59pm) we'll be closing the doors on pre-registrations for What The Fur 2015. So for the next 4 days you can get registered for What The Fur for a slightly cheaper rate! But after that, it all changes.
Also, as of the same time, the Holiday Inn won't be able to guarantee the rates for the rooms. So if you still need a room and haven't booked one yet, do so now! Or, look around on here, or on our Room & Ride Share page to find a room mate.

So again: May 7th. Midnight.

(Also, it's now only 18 days until the convention!)

Time ticks away. One second per second, moving forward and not stopping. It's a drawback to not actually having a time machine. And as time moves forward, the future becomes the present, and then the past. But when something is coming on the temporal horizon, you have to get yourself ready to seize the moment. And the time for seizing is now. Or will be now. Or will have has to be...

Here at What The Fur, we're doing our best to bring you things to do, to see, and to learn. We also want to give those of you who want to share your knowledge and talents the chance. Our programming department - probably experts at either packing the trunks of cars or masters of Tetris - is working hard to put our schedule together.
To that end, they've created a fixed point in time. Specifically, midnight on April 10th. At the roll over to April 11th we will close the gates on offers of programming. So if you want to run a panel or workshop, you have until then to let us know! Visit our programming page athttp://whatthefur.ca/events/programming.html and fill in the form if you're interested.
And to clear the air a bit, you do not have to be bilingual to run a panel. It can be in English, French, or both! If you feel that you'd like to have someone there to help with translating we'll do our best to help out!

Pretty soon you’re going to need to have all of your friends chew gum just to fix the umbrella frame on the top of the phone booth to get your panel on the schedule!
What The Fur’s programming grid is nearing completion, and there’s very few slots left! So if you’re thinking of hosting a panel, a workshop, an event, a game, a tea party, a poetry slam, or a discussion group, now is the time (Not tomorrow, and not last week... well, last week would be okay I guess)! Visit out programming page and submit the form and we’ll do our best to squeak you into the schedule! But if you wait to fix the time machine, you’ll miss your chance!

Hey! You want real time travel? Well, we're bringing back the 90s for our American friends!
Right now, we've worked the flux capacitor to set the exchange rates back to what they were about a decade ago!
But we can't guarantee how long the time warp will last (perhaps if you just jump to the left?).
Take advantage of What The Fur's lower pre-registration prices, and if you're from the US and decide to pay right away, you get the added bonus of a really good exchange rate!

What The Fur's Dealers Room has only one half-table remaining available! That's 3 feet of space still up for grabs!
What does this mean? Well, if anyone is looking to still be a dealer, we will have Artist's Alley tables available, but space is not guaranteed.
Also, we will start up a waiting list for prospective dealers. Rules will be posted to the website in the next couple of days.

What does this mean for the rest of you?
You can go to our Dealers page on the website and check out who all will be in our Dealers room! And we have links to all of their stuff so you can see what they'll have to offer!

Which is odd, considering the nature of time travel. But there are some fixed points in time that just cannot be changed.
One of those is the end of our Early Bird Pre-registration pricing.
On December 1st, 2014, all of our registration levels go up in price. Only the Patron level of membership remains at its current rate.
Remember: So long as you register by the end of the month you don't need to pay until later!
Check our registration page for details and to register now!
(Offers only valid for the 2015 edition of What The Fur. Future Time Travellers must register in the prescribed period. Temporal mail will not be accepted.)

There’s a funny thing about time travel that most people don’t take into account.
When you travel back in time, or forward, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll end up in the same place. Physically. It is a constant danger when travelling forward or back. You might end up on the other side of the city, continent, planet, or (let hope never) it might leave you floating in space. So always remember to make sure your time travelling vehicle is sealed (or at least that the windows can roll up), bring an extra pair of socks (you never know), and your towel (The Guide got that correct).

What The Fur Presents:
Time Travellin’ Furries
May 22-24 2015, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

We have some news!

In order of importance, we have a few major tidbits of news to give you.
The first of which is the most important

We have had to change dates.
What The Fur will now be held on the weekend of the 22-24 of May 2015.
We understand that this might cause issues for some people, and we apologise for this. But the change in dates being us to the second piece of news.
If this directly impacts anyone who has already registered, we ask you to please contact our Registration department as soon as you can.

We’re moving!
In 2014 we moved from the downtown area of Montréal to the West Island area following the closure of our home at the time, the Delta Centre-Ville. We made this tough decision because in the next few years, major changes to the highway interchanges will make it nearly impossible to get around the centre of the city – and any local can tell you how hard it already is to get around downtown. We did not want to put any of you through this nightmare. Moving to the West Island was seen as a great opportunity to find a new home for What The Fur.

Although the Sheraton was a very nice hotel, we listened to you, the attendees, and understood that the area was not up to the standards that you had come to expect. We heard you loud and clear; your message was strong and we have taken decisions accordingly. Once again, What The Fur will be moving. Yes, we know, nobody likes moving hotels, but we're moving to a location that will give you most, if not everything you asked for out of the convention's hotel.
We are moving to the Holiday Inn Pointe-Claire.
The hotel, still in the West Island, is situated south on Highway 40, right across from one of the biggest super regional shopping malls on the island of Montreal, the Fairview Pointe-Claire Mall, as well as surrounded by plenty of restaurants for all budgets and tastes and stores for any needs you might have. And most of which are within walking distance!

You also told us that our event space was too spread out; with this new location, everything is all together, making it easier than ever to move through space (we’re not sure about time yet...). Not only that, but we heard you about the hangout space (the “zoo” as so many of you called it); you’re getting that back! We’re still in discussion about getting enclosures though...
And to top it off, parking is free!

Early Bird pre-registration is still going on!
Keep in mind that our Early Bird pre-registration period is open until December 1st, where you can get your memberships for a much lower rate. On December 1st the prices will go up for everything except for our Patron level of membership

What The Fur couldn't function without volunteers. Everyone on staff, from the Chair to security to that guy that makes sure there's a post-it notepad available give of their time to make the event what it is. But the team as it is can't do it all.

Are you looking to just lend us a little of your time? We'll happily accept! Just fill in the volunteers form on the website.

However, if you're looking to help out a little more, if you're looking for more of a challenge, you just might be in luck! We have some specific staff openings!
